If you have a broken heart, Valentine’s Day might seem like a cruel joke to you. If your break up is fresh and feelings are hurt, you just have to know several things and follow a few simple rules to survive this day.

What do you need to know?

  • You are not the first and not the last person who has a broken heart. Each and every person who ever has a relationship will have a broken heart at least once.
  • Valentine’s Day is not a real holiday. It’s not about love; it’s about companies making money.
  • Spending Valentine’s Day without a significant one is not the end of the world.
  • The longer you’ll stay in a negative and tragic mood, the longer you’ll attract more unfortunate events.
  • You don’t have a loss; you are going through a lesson and the sooner you learn, the sooner you’ll have a chance to meet your Prince Charming.

What NOT to do on Valentine’s Day.  DO NOT:

  • Text or call your ex under any circumstances.
  • Drink alcohol – you need to be totally in control of your emotions.
  • Go on a random date with “whoever” – it will make you feel much worse.
  • Have a one night stand with either a total stranger or a supportive male friend who’s been helping you for a while.
  • Spend this day with your best friend couple who is madly in love.
  • Meet your single friends in any “romantic restaurant” where you might see lots of happy couples.
  • Talk about your ex and how great of a time you guys had together.
  • Think that you’re the unhappiest person in the whole Universe.
  • Eat ice cream from the box thinking that your nice body does not matter anymore.

What you SHOULD do:

  • Control your thoughts, so your ex won’t be popping up in your mind (if you need to learn more, read the Broken Heart 911 Program).
  • Spend time with positive, happy people who really love you; people who would support you emotionally without tearing your soul apart with comments about your ex.
  • Do something nice to yourself – buy yourself a gift or go to some interesting fitness class or spa.
  • Start thinking about your future – what makes you happy, what you really want from this life, and how you think you can get there.
  • Go to sleep early – tomorrow will be another day and you’ll be able to start it fresh.
  • Watch a comedy or action movie – or anything that is positive and can take your thoughts away.
  • Read a self help program that will help you avoid the same mistakes in the future.

If you are single on Valentine’s Day, it means different things to different people.  The definition of “being happily single” has never been cancelled. Being single, self sufficient, and happy is much better than being in a dysfunctional, broken, lonely relationship.

Of course, being in a perfect relationship with your Prince Charming who you are in love with and who is crazy about you is every woman’s ultimate dream, but…let’s be realistic here. Finding “the right one” is a gift that life gives us when the time is right and we are ready. If you are reading this now and trying to figure out how to kill time on Valentine’s Day (and especially in the evening), it just means that:

  • It’s not your time yet. You are not ready (even though you think you are).
  • You chose freedom over commitment and are paying the price. You chose to be in charge of your life, do what you want, and not do what you don’t want. Everything has a price and a lonely Valentine’s Day can be part of it. If you are completely lonely and sad, go online and join a dating site. You will find that there lot’s of independent people whose freedom is sacred in the online dating world.
  • You just broke up with someone – celebrate the endings, they are new beginnings. One year from now, you might be laughing at yourself and saying a big “thank you” to your ex for doing such a great favor for you. Life is full of surprises.
  • You moved to a new city. If you don’t know many people, you have two choices. Either enjoy staying at home and doing something fun (whatever makes you happy) or get dressed and go where people are – a restaurant, bar, gallery, shopping mall, or concert. You never know where you can meet your special one. You are not the only single in this city. How romantic would it be to meet your new love on Valentine’s Day?
  • You moved to a new city and you are in a long distance relationship. Well, put on something cute, pour a glass of wine, and get on video chat with your beau. However, I would really suggest doing something that is described above.

If you are single on Valentine’s Day, it’s ok. You need to have fun, celebrate your happiness, and enjoy yourself.

Being single is about choices you’ve made in the past and whether you’ll remain single in the future totally depends on your choices now. Make a choice that is good for you and we’ll see – maybe you’ll be reading our newest program about the ultimate dating secrets

Broken heart? Here is a guide on how to survive Single Awareness Day

How do I get over a broken heart? If you are in the process of figuring that out, then Valentine’s Day aka Single Awareness Day probably makes you sad, sick in your stomach, and awfully depressed. You probably think about how miserable it would feel being by yourself while many happy couples are enjoying each other’s company. I’ve got news for you. The importance of Valentine’s Day is overestimated, overrated, and totally commercialized. Yes, it’s nice to have a day of love but if it is real love, why should it be celebrated for only one day? People deserve to be loved and treated nicely every single day of their lives. I’m not sure about eating too much chocolate or love cupcakes, but giving flowers and gifts is a must in each healthy relationship.

Valentine’s Day is the third largest sales day for florists, jewelry, gift companies, and restaurants after Black Friday and Cyber Monday! Therefore, all those symbols of love in each and every internet and TV ad are not about making you feeling special but about companies making healthy profits.

If you have a broken heart, there are 7 things to do on Single Awareness Day

  •  First thing in the morning, type (or write) at least 5-7 things about your life that you are thankful for. Try to stretch it up to 10. There is a great chance that at the end of this exercise you’ll become thankful for being single.
  •  Being single is your present relationship status, not a permanent diagnosis. This is a temporary condition that can always be improved. Be aware that there are many ways to meet great people – your future is in the future.
  • Avoid visiting places where you might see many couples. While many of them might not be even so happy together, it would be better for you to stay away.
  • Avoid spending time in a “men haters” club. Spinning negativity with unhappy and angry females and talking about how bad men are won’t make you feel better. Men are not bad; you just had an unfortunate experience.  The fact that your past relationship (or two or three) did not work, does not prove that you’ll be single forever. It just means that your time is not now.
  • Remember, you are not alone! There are millions of people who are Single, Aware, and Happy.
  • There is a price for everything and sometimes being by yourself is a way to pay for your freedom – the ability to do what you want or not to do what you don’t want.
  • If you think that this day is about love, then go ahead and spoil yourself the way you would like to be spoiled. There is nothing wrong with treating yourself and who cares that you did it for you?

The history of Valentine’s Day — and its patron saint — is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor’s daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.

It’s no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D — others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “christianize” celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification.

Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.

The boys then sliced the goat’s hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day around 498 A.D.

The Roman “lottery” system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine’s Day — should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.

According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)

Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine’s Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.”

  • Won’t You Be My Valentine

For all the times I have hurt you,
All the times I didn’t support you.
For all the times I failed to shine,
Darling, won’t you be my Valentine?

For all the times I have let you down,
And all the times I made you frown.
For all the times I blew your mind,
Darling, won’t you be my Valentine?

For all the times I told a lie,
And all the times I made you cry.
For all the times that I was blind,
Darling, won’t you be my Valentine?

For all the times you have missed me,
And all the times you have kissed me.
For all the times your lips touched mine,
Darling, won’t you be my Valentine?

For all the times we made sweet love,
Al the times we prayed to God above.
For that little girl, sweet daughter of mine,
Darling, won’t you be my Valentine?

For all the hurt and all the tears,
The good times throughout the years.
For all the time you have been mine,
Darling, won’t you be my Valentine? – Ronald Doe

  • My First, My Last, My Valentine…

I’ve never imagined that there can be this day.
A day that love will find its way.
Out of my heart and into your soul.
These feelings I have are beyond my control.

All my life I have waited patiently.
For a goddess like you, so beautiful, so lovely.
Words can’t express the way I feel.
These feelings towards you are all for real.

You are the reason why I go on.
Eternity can’t separate this special bond.
This heart of mine is reserved for you.
Forever it is yours, this love is true.

I’ll be your first and you’ll be my last.
My world, my everything, till my time has past.
I will always love you until the end of time.

  • Valentine Poem to Boyfriend – My Valentine

You’re everything to me.
Love was where we were meant to be.
You’re so sweet.
Kissing you knocks me off my feet.
Dancing with you in the bright moon light.
When we’re together I know it feels so right.
Your kisses take my breath away.
I love being with you every night and every day.
Loving you is like a dream come true.
I love you.
If I couldn’t tell you how I feel.
Would you wonder if this love is real?
My love for you goes on for each mile.
No matter what you do you always make me smile.
So this poem is showing you that you’re everything to me.
You’re funny, sweet and you’re always true.
That’s why you’re a part of me
I love you, you’re my valentine.

  • Valentine Poem  – When I Found You

When I found you
I used to dream that someday I might
find a lover who would be tender, kind,
and passionate…

I used to dream that someone whose
touch would awaken my heart and fill
me with sensations I had only
imagined I would ever feel…

A partner who would show me how love
was meant to be…

I told myself that this was more than
I could hope for-more than I could
ever deserve.

I used to hope that someday I might
have a friend who would know what was
deep inside my heart some one with
whom I would be safe to share my
secrets, my dreams, my fantasies, and
my fears…

A friend I could always count on to
listen and to understand…

I told myself that this was more
than anyone could hope and much more
than I could ever be worthy of…

I never let my heart imagine that I
would find all of this and more…
but that’s what was waiting for me in
your arms.

I found the best friend and the best
lover I could ever have hoped for… When
I found you

Happy Valentine’s day
to my dreams come true.   - Pauline L. Howard

  • Valentine’s Day

If I could be the postman
For just one single time,
I’d choose to carry Valentines

All up and down the street.

  • For Valentine’s Day

Out of a snow cloud, cold and gray,
Something dropped on St. Valentine’s Day,

And I guess the sky children were sending down,
This Valentine straight to the children in town.

Valentines, valentines, count them with me.

Count them with me! 1-2-3-4-5…..

He ran the fastest to the valentine box.

  • Love is a Circle

Love is a circle,

Round and round,
Love goes up,
And love comes down,
Love is on the inside,
Trying to get out,
Love is whirling and twirling about!

  • To My Valentine

If apples were pears
And peaches were plums
And the rose had a different name.
If tigers were bears
And fingers were thumbs
I’d love you just the same.

Valentine so bright and gay,
I am sending out today.
With the message, “I love you,”
Hoping that you love me, too.

  • A Valentine

Frost flowers on the window glass,

Hopping chickadees that pass,
Bare old elms that bend and sway,
Pussy willows soft and gray.
Silver clouds across the sky,
Lacy snow flakes flitting by,
Icicles like fringe in line
That is outdoor’s Valentine.

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way
than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep. Pablo Neruda.

  • Beautiful Love

If I could spend a day with you,
we’d never get enough of each other’s company.
We’d hold hands as we strolled
along the beach and we’d talk about everything.

If I could spend an evening with you,
I’d cherish each minute that we’re together.
I’d stare into your eyes,
and, without a single word,
you’d know how much I love you.

If I could spend a night with you,
I’d hold you in my arms the
whole night long…
and I’d make passionate love to you.

If I could spend a day with you,
we’d never get enough of each other’s company.
We’d hold hands as we strolled
along the beach and we’d talk about everything.

If I could spend an evening with you,
I’d cherish each minute that we’re together.
I’d stare into your eyes,
and, without a single word,
you’d know how much I love you.

If I could spend a night with you,
I’d hold you in my arms the
whole night long…
and I’d make passionate love to you.

If I could spend my life with you,
I’d try to make you happy.
I’d always be there for you,
wiping away your tears when
you’re sad or blue,
and every day,
I’d tell you how much I cherish you
and our beautiful love.

I can’t begin to tell you
How much you mean to me
My world would end if ever we were through
I can’t begin to tell you
How happy I would be
If I could speak my mind like others do
I make such pretty speeches whenever we’re apart
But when you’re near
The words I choose refuse to leave my heart
So take the sweetest phrases the world has ever known
And make believe I’ve said them all to you
I Can’t Begin To Tell You
Bing Crosby

You’re in my thoughts and in my heart

Wherever I may go;
On Valentine’s Day I’d like to say
I care more than you know.
By Joanna Fuchs

On Valentine’s Day,
I’m thinking about
the special ways
you have made my life better.
The little things,
the not-so-little things…
Your kindness,
the way you always listen
and pay attention to me.
You make my world brighter and richer.
You’re a gift to me,
and I thank you for being you.

I love you all through February,
Not just on Valentine’s Day;
I cherish you when flowers of spring
Appear in the midst of May.
I adore you in the summer,
When the air is filled with heat;
Without you in my life each day,
I wouldn’t be complete.
I treasure you in fall,
When leaves are turning gold;
I loved you when you were younger;
I’ll love you when you’re old.
I prize you in the winter,
When colder days are here;
I love you, love you all the time,
Every minute of the year.
So I’ll give to you this Valentine,
But I want to let you know,
It’s not just today, but always,
That I will love you so.
By Joanna Fuchs

My Valentine, you’re all I want;
In you, I find joy and delight;
You give me everything I need;
I’m happiest when you’re in sight.
I think of you both night and day;
I’m drawn to you in pure attraction;
When you’re not here, I ache for you,
For your fulfilling satisfaction.
I dreamed of love like this, and yet,
I never thought that I would capture
The deep, exciting thrills we have,
This intoxicating bliss and rapture.
Please be my Valentine, and more;
Be my life, my world, my all;
Together we can be content,
And share life’s pleasures, big and small.

“I hate valentines day!” is the most common phrase said by single people in their most despised holiday – Single Awareness Day. There are reasons behind this saying because society puts tremendous pressure on currently single people.

People who are single by choice suddenly start feeling anxiety and doubts about their lifestyles. “What if…” they think. This means “What if I made the wrong choice, what if I had gotten married, what if I had concentrated on looking for my potential significant other?” Those multiple “ifs” twirl inside of their heads 24/7 as soon as they are trigged by multiple red ads with heart shaped objects.

People who are single by choice usually win those inner battles pretty quickly and do not acknowledge the “V” holiday at all. They pretend it does not exist. However, this group of people is not that big. The largest “I hate Valentines Day” group is people who went through a dramatic break up. They either just cured their broken heart or still have it. Those people would give up lots of things in their lives in order to be held by someone who loves them on Valentines Day. Of course, 90% of those people are women.

Unfortunately, the real situation is not that simple. Those single people who dread being single on Valentines Day put a tremendous amount of pressure, anxiety, jealousy, and negativity on themselves. This is very dangerous because it can not only damage their health, but can also attract negative events in other areas of their lives (work, family, social, etc). Their inner moaning and crying about their exes might lead to not only multiple diseases (if they have kids under thirteen years old, the kids might get sick), but also to unemployment, loss of business, and conflicts with family and friends.

Dear people whose favorite mantra is “I Hate Valentines Day!”, stop chanting it right now. You have to switch your attention. If you don’t know how to do it, the Broken Heart 911 program has a whole chapter dedicated to this subject

Why don’t you treat Valentines Day like Martin Luther King Day, Saint Patrick’s Day, or Veterans Day? You don’t have a date? Great! It is much better to be meaningfully single than to be alone within the couple. Go out and watch people. You will be surprised how many couples are “on duty” because “they have to do valentine rituals.” Yes, there are lots of happy couples and it’s great. However, if you are not in a happy or at least functional relationship, it is better to be single. You don’t have to be completed. The “to be complete” myth was created by the sales department of the first matchmaking service.

There are several ideas for single people on how to spend Valentines Day:

  • Is there something that you have always wanted to do, but never had extra time or budget? Do it on Valentines Day whether it is trying a pole dancing class, doing a seaweed wrap, or buying a useless but beautiful piece of jewelry.
  • Do you have a single friend or relative who you haven’t seen in a while? Go see this person. Perhaps you have your favorite niece who can’t wait to see you or your little sister who never gets your attention. If you are a single parent, spend your time with your kid doing something fun. Trust me, her (his) memories will be more valuable in the long term than spending time with “whoever was available.”
  • Splurge on anything you want that would make you feel good.
  • Go see a great movie, play, or concert.
  • Remember that you are not the only one. You just feel like it. There are millions of people who are in the same boat as you.

Read this blog. We are going to create a month long Valentines section that will be dedicated to making all single and broken hearted people feel good. Instead of thinking “I hate Valentines Day”, think “Let me make this Valentines Day the first day of my new, happy life.” Some people make New Year Resolution, you make a Valentines Day Resolution that will be the first stair on a large ladder of your future happiness.
